Dentist

Overview
Dentists are healthcare professionals who specialize in diagnosing, treating, and preventing
conditions affecting the teeth, gums, mouth, and surrounding oral structures. They perform
examinations, take and interpret dental X-rays, treat cavities, perform restorative procedures,
extract teeth, fit crowns and bridges, and educate patients about oral hygiene and preventive care.
Dentists play an important role in overall health because oral conditions can impact nutrition,
speech, self-confidence, and systemic health.
The profession combines healthcare knowledge with technical precision and artistic skill.
Dentists often develop long-term relationships with patients and families, providing care across
many years. Some dentists practice general dentistry while others specialize in orthodontics, oral
surgery, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, endodontics, prosthodontics, or other specialty areas.
The career offers opportunities for private practice ownership, specialization, teaching, research,
and healthcare leadership.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands
Dentists typically work in private dental offices, group practices, community clinics, hospitals,
military facilities, or academic institutions. Most maintain regular daytime schedules, although
some practices offer evening or weekend appointments to accommodate patients. The work
environment is generally clean, professional, and focused on patient care and comfort.
The profession requires significant manual dexterity and physical stamina. Dentists often spend
long periods sitting or standing while performing detailed procedures in confined areas of the
mouth. Precision and concentration are essential because even small errors can affect treatment
outcomes. Repetitive hand movements and maintaining specific working positions may
contribute to physical strain, making good posture and ergonomic practices important throughout
a dentists career.

Specific Skills Needed
Dentists require strong scientific knowledge in biology, anatomy, physiology, pathology, and
pharmacology. Excellent hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills are necessary for
performing precise procedures. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills help dentists
evaluate oral health conditions, interpret diagnostic information, and develop effective treatment
plans tailored to individual patients.
Strong communication skills are equally important because dentists must educate patients about
treatment options, oral hygiene practices, and preventive care. Compassion and empathy help
reduce patient anxiety and build trust, especially among individuals who fear dental procedures.
Business management skills can also be valuable for dentists who own or manage private
practices and oversee staff, finances, and operations.

Education Requirements
While in High School:
Students should focus on biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and
health science courses. Participation in science clubs, healthcare programs, volunteer activities,
and leadership organizations can strengthen preparation for dental school. Job shadowing a
dentist provides valuable insight into the profession and can help students confirm their interest
in oral healthcare.
College and Professional Education: Dentists typically complete a bachelors degree followed
by four years of dental school, earning either a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of
Dental Medicine (DMD) degree. Admission to dental school is highly competitive and requires
strong academic performance and completion of prerequisite science courses. Graduates must
pass licensing examinations and meet state requirements before practicing independently.
Specialists complete additional residency training in their chosen field.

Salary Expectations and Career Outlook
In Oklahoma, general dentists commonly earn between $140,000 and $250,000 annually
depending on experience, location, specialty services, and ownership status. Specialists such as
orthodontists and oral surgeons often earn substantially higher incomes. Practice ownership can
increase earning potential but also involves additional business responsibilities and financial risk.
The outlook for dentists remains positive throughout Oklahoma. Population growth, increasing
awareness of oral health, and demand for preventive and restorative dental services continue to
support employment opportunities. Rural communities often experience shortages of dental
providers, creating opportunities for new graduates and experienced professionals. Dentistry
offers strong job stability, excellent earning potential, and opportunities for entrepreneurship.
