Education Requirements:

While in HS:  While in high school, students interested in a career in real estate should focus on developing strong communication, math, and business skills by taking courses in English, mathematics, economics, and marketing. Participating in debate, public speaking, or leadership clubs can help build confidence and interpersonal abilities. Gaining experience through part-time jobs or internships in sales, customer service, or real estate offices can provide valuable insight into the profession. Additionally, learning about local real estate markets and basic finance can give students a head start in understanding the industry. You might also consider taking college courses (concurrent enrollment) while in high school to save time and money.  Ask your High School Counselor or a Vista Member for more information.

College or Tech Training:  To prepare for a career in real estate, students often pursue postsecondary education such as an associate or bachelor’s degree in fields like business, finance, marketing, or real estate. Many states require prospective agents to complete pre-licensing courses that cover real estate laws, ethics, contracts, and practices before taking the licensing exam. Some community colleges and technical schools offer specialized real estate programs that combine coursework with practical training. Continuing education is also important for maintaining licensure and staying current with industry changes.

A Note About Transferring - Oklahoma provides for many seamless pathways from local community colleges to regional and state universities which allows you to take advantage of a more cost effective way for you to earn credits at a reduced rate with guaranteed transferability.  You can possibly stay closer to home and save money and still reach your academic and career goals.  Ask your High School Counselor or a Vista Member for more information.

Other Requirements or Recommendations: In addition to education and licensing, aspiring real estate agents must pass a state licensing exam to legally practice, which typically requires thorough preparation. Building a strong professional network is crucial for success, as referrals and connections often lead to new clients. Agents should also be comfortable with technology, using tools like MLS databases, social media, and digital marketing to promote listings and communicate with clients. Developing a solid ethical foundation is important to maintain trust and comply with legal standards. Lastly, patience and persistence are key, as building a client base and earning steady income can take time in this competitive field.
